BRIT JUDE LAW, 26, IS MARRIED TO ACTRESS SADIE FROST AND buddies with Ewan McGregor and Oasis. Prior to “Mr. Ripley,” he did wonderful turns in movies like Gattaca and Wilde.

NEWSWEEK: Your “Ripley” character, Dickie, is so carefree. You usually play troubled souls.

LAW: It was kind of cathartic not to play someone who was carrying excess luggage-who was, if anything, throwing his luggage to the winds … But I think that, deep down, Dickie’s living on borrowed time. I think in his heart of hearts he knows that come 35 he’ll probably be living back in New York, running his father’s business, ith Marge and three children.

Uma Thurman called you “the ultimate actor-slash-rock star:’ You’re not a musician, so I have to ask-was that a compliment?

(Laughs) I dunno. You’d have to ask Uma. I hope so. You know how the British press operate. I have some great friends that people like writing about-I’ve known Ewan McGregor for a good eight or nine years. And there are some musicians I know that live in my area. London’s a finny place. You go out once, and the thing’s photographed. If I believed every thing that was -written about me at the moment, I’d be out every night partying.

You must have teased Ewan about The Phantom Menace.

I can’t tease him. My sons worship him. We had a “Star Wars” birthday party, and my baby son was Obi-Wan. I wouldn’t ever begin to tease a Jedi knight.
