Jude Law has been cast as Jack Burden, the journo-narrator of Robert Penn Warren’s novel “All the King’s Men,” which is being adapted at Columbia Pictures.

Sean Penn is in negotiations to star as Willie Stark, the Huey Long-like politician whose rise and fall the film chronicles.

Production begins later this fall.

Steven Zaillian wrote the script and is directing.

Phoenix Pictures chairman Mike Medavoy and prexy Arnie Messer are producing, with Zaillian and former Col exec Ken Lemberger.

Longtime Democratic consultant James Carville and Todd Phillips are exec producing.

New pic will draw more heavily on Penn Warren’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, published in 1946, than on the 1949 best picture Oscar winner starring Broderick Crawford and John Ireland.

Law next stars with Gwyneth Paltrow in Paramount’s “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow,” bowing in September. In October he’ll be seen in Fox Searchlight’s “I Heart Huckabee’s,” directed and written by David O. Russell. He recently wrapped “Closer,” which Mike Nichols is helming for Columbia.
